WISE Hosts Spring 2026 Wonderful Undergraduate Research Symposium
Lawrence, Kansas — May 13, 2026 — The Wonderful Institute for Sustainable Engineering (WISE) proudly hosted its Spring 2026 Wonderful Undergraduate Research Symposium on May 7, 2026, highlighting the innovative research and accomplishments of undergraduate students across its engineering programs. Held at the conclusion of each fall and spring semester, the symposium serves as a celebration of student achievement, collaboration, and academic growth.
This semester’s symposium featured 12 individual and group presentations from 17 undergraduate researchers working on projects spanning a variety of engineering and sustainability-focused topics. Students presented projects related to refrigerant separation technologies and PFAS removal from water, as well as studies examining greener chemical processing methods and the effects of compressed CO2 on plastic hydrocracking. Other presentations highlighted the development of hands-on laboratory experiments using hydrogels and emulsions to support undergraduate education.
The Wonderful Symposium continues to provide a supportive and engaging environment where students can share the results of their hard work and dedication throughout the semester. The event also gives attendees a chance to learn more about the impactful research taking place within WISE and to celebrate the accomplishments of the institute’s undergraduate researchers.
Building on the success of the Fall 2025 event, the Spring 2026 symposium marked the second time the event was livestreamed on YouTube, allowing a broader audience to participate and support student presenters virtually. Viewers can follow the WISE YouTube channel (@KUWISE) for future symposium livestreams, student highlights, and institute updates.
WISE remains committed to fostering undergraduate research opportunities that prepare students to become future leaders in engineering, sustainability, and innovation. Through hands-on research experiences and interdisciplinary collaboration, students gain the skills and confidence needed to address complex global challenges.
The Wonderful Institute for Sustainable Engineering at the University of Kansas is dedicated to advancing global sustainability through transformative engineering, science, and education.
